This thesis classifies the cities from ancient to modern with diachronic view based on the background and conception. Thus it allows to discuss that a seaport town’s distinct feature and differential position. One of the keynotes on the city studies recently is to name the cities by bringing their particular characters into relief. Cities are classified in terms of capital, trade(history), culture, system and value other than city scale and industry.
Furthermore, the seaport town has strong character as combination of divergent culture and has brought experience on the exchanges of cross border and also has special city experience that different elements have formed mutual coexistence. For that reason this certainly will provide humanistic discourses. Seaport towns are emphasized as one of the conceptual tools in Korea.
In this regard, seaport town means perceptual space of trance-national thought that emphasis coexistence and communication. It can be differential feature of ‘seaport’ which has different background from other cities. As a city seaport town, it will provide valuable discourse as well as connection of complementarities, network(communication and coexistence), autonomy, freedom(post colonialism, cross-border), creativity of art and cultural tolerance(diversity, reciprocity), nature, environment and the quality of life(sustainability) and it will provide.
Thus, setting up the seaport town as ‘the space of post nation conception’ is clearly the discovery of cities that is different from the existing cities. That is to assign the most important feature to the seaport town overlapping three dimensions such as special historical experience and globalization and maritime world.
