Although not far from Seoul, Seongnam area was more fall behind than other neighborhood area in Kwangju and also not good for living because there's no local speciality or plain for agriculture. But here was a cultured town which has bronze-age culture centering around Bundang besides Tancheon(a stream), and Namhansanseong(a mountain fortress) what is known as a origin site of Baekjae kingdom, and many historical remains of stations and beacons.
Under the rule of Japanese Imperialism, Seongnam area shows various struggle to protect own proper cultural tradition. These struggles was moved forward to strengthen nation's capacity like as awakening anti-japanese awareness or supporting independent fight.
Modernization in Seongnam area was intend to anti foreign power and anti feudalism which was the historical problems of that age. For example, establish school, publish newspaper or magazine, development industrial to grow up nation's power and take back national rights.
Also an army in the cause of justice was directly claim anti foreign power and anti feudalism. They punished japanese landowner or betrayers who sympathize with Japan to show unshaken faith of anti Imperialism. It was national movement for independent and to solve contradiction of a nation and classes. But, it has unsatisfied feeling because didn't extend to enlightenment drive. However it gained important position in modern time movement because it overcame a limit of the conservatives movement and acted as main force of anti Japanese Imperialism.
Theres some problem to solve for Seongnam to advance. First, rising it's status to a metro politan city. Second, change to city which has peculiarity of information and venture. Third, need harmony between first Seongnam and Bundang and Pan-gyo newtown. At last, build up Seongnam's own character to preparations for decentralization of culture from the capitol region to local areas.
Now is the time to free from capitol bound, and found it's cultural response from historical tradition than the present age. It also need composition of professional History-Culture research body to practice study continuously and systematically.
