When referring to the chronological record of a writer, we can easily know his career life. But a chronological record must be in detail and organized correctly. Only by the combination of the two can the historical and objective understanding of that writer come into view.
In this paper, I intend to do researches on the facts and editing of 『Ik-Jae sensaeong yenbo(益齊先生年譜)』. Through comparing and analysing the chronological record, Ik-Jae's literary works and history books related, I found that the chronological record was not thorough enough or correctly edited. Like overstating passing the civil service examination as passing the civil service examination with the first grade(Jangwuen) the book is with bombast in many places, shifted other literati's activities to Ik-Jae for enriching the descriptions. As some activities were merely recorded without careful investigation, they were not in a proper order. Also from the history books and Ik-Jae's works, we can see many things could be added or simply recorded in full, but I regret to say no such work seemed done precisely.
These problems don't exist only in the If'Ik-Jae sensaeng yenboj. As the chronological records more than often were done by the descendants or literati, limits of such books are unavoidable. To this point, I should notify our researchers that don't because of convenience, rely just on the chronological records for commenting on the writer or introducing his/her career. In you researches, when the career of that person is concerned, you'd better not cite merely what is in his/her chronological record so as to ignore the original materials. In addition, I tried to include the correctly compiled chronological record of Ik-Jae in this paper, but it is a very effort-charged job, so I am keeping on doing it.
