After the chronological record of Lee Kyu-bo was compiled by his son in the middle period of Kory?, the chronological record began to be set to work in earnest from the late Kory? to the early Chason. Mast chronological records in the late Kory? and the early Chosen were the Pyo-bo(標譜) system made up of three compartments, unlike that of Song(宋) dynasty in China which was composed of four compartments. Pyo-bo system put down periods(紀年) in the upper part and accounts in the middle and low part. The chronological records of Lee Gok, Lee Saek, Lee Ch?m, Kw?n K?n, Ch?ng Mong-ju were produced in this Pyo-bo system. It is presumed that these were used as basic materials for an inscription on a tombstone or record of a deceased person's life. Early Kang-mok(綱目) style emerged in the later 15th century, but we have precedents for it in the chronological record of Lee Kyu-bo in the middle period of Kory? and that of Min Sa-py?ng in the late Kory?. The early Kang-mok style was a main style of the chronological record until the later 16th century. Compared with the previous Pyo-bo system, the contents of the early Kang-mok style became more detailed and the intention of compiling the chronological record was to deliver the literati's lifetirne achievements. The chronological records of Kim Suk-ja and Kim Hon are the representative ones of the early Kang-mok style. The chronological record of Kang-mok style is a complete form of the early Kang-mok style. The chronological record of Lee ?n-j?k produced in the later 16th century is the earlist one. Kang-mok style in which the main account was described in divisions(綱) and more detailed accounts were described in subdivisions(目) became the typical style of the chronological record since the 17th century. With this Kang-mok style, Ki-ny?n (紀年) style based on 「Juja-y?nbo(朱子年譜)」 was also used from the middle part of the 16th century. This style put down the period every year regardless of the accounts and recorded a year centering on an era name of China.
This study deals with the chronological records until the 16th century which belong to the earlier period of Chos?n and examines the formal change of the chronological record and the procession how each one was produced. The compilation of the chronological record became activated since the 17th century and the most chronological records were produced in the 18th and 19th century. Therefore, more arguments about the chronological records in the later Chas?n are needed. Mast chronological records in this period were the Ki-ny?n(紀年) system of 「Juja-y?nbo」 style and Kang-mok style. Except some changes of Ki-nyon system after the downfall of Ming(明) dynasty, there was nothing to be noteworthy in the chronological records in the later Chos?n. That is why this study is focusing on the chronological records before the 16th century.
