The whaling industry in Donghaean(東海岸) was begun by whaling ships of Russia after the eighteen nineties. But it was made clear that they caught whales in leased JangSaengPo of Donghaean(東海岸) in 1895. They dissected half the haul of captured whale in JangSaengPo of Donghaean.(東海岸) Therefore JangSaengPo was the important place of the Russian whaling industry.
Japanese began the whaling industry by agreement with The Daehan Empire in Donghaean(東海岸) from 1903. In this course, JangSaengPo became the important place of the Japanese whaling industry.
Japan defeated Russia in war, and monopolized the whaling industry in Donghaean.(東海岸) It was made newly clear that then, there ware 8 places of whale dissection place, that is 8,810 pyung(坪).
The whaling industry of Jeonnam(全南) prospered more that of Gyeongnam(慶南) from 1922 to 1929. But after 1936, JangSaengPo became Mecca of the whaling industry in Korea.
JangSaengPo community underwent changes with prosperity of the korean whaling industry from the late nineteenth century. JangSaengPo with the beginning of the whaling industry dominated over BangEoJin which was the important port of Ulsan in marine products, agricultural products and exportation-importation in the middle-1920s.
Government and public facilities was built from 1910s with prosperity of whaling industry in JangSaengPo. And Government and public facilities was moved, industry equipments that is, harbor works and electricity installation was built with prosperity of JangSaengPo after the middle-1930s.
The growth of the whaling industry made these possible.
