This dissertation is determined to the theme of the stone Buddhas in Chungju area, and I was concerned to those buddha statues taking the opportunity of participation of excavation activities around the Chungju dam area submerged in 1976. I participated the activities in the first and second times in Daewon-sa temple area which is located in Miruk-ri, Sangmo-myeon, Chungju city.
Above all, I wrote my dissertation on the basis of many documents which I had collected in the region that would be submerged, and I had surveyed the measures and pictures of those submerged region.
In this dissertation, Chungju are is called the present Chungju city in administrative, that is former administrative region including Jungwon-Gun(county) before the integrated city of Chungju.
The present Buddhist statues are all 20, and I was able to get the following distinctions in the result of my research.
First, most of the Buddhist statues were built in the middle of Korea Dynasty like other regions.
Second, most of the Buddhist statues built in 11 centuries - the early and earlier middle period - are the big size.
Third, there are many iron Buddhist statues in Chungju area because of lots of iron productions in this region which is included one of the three major iron regions, so I think the main reason of the school formation is possible.
Fourth, the stone Buddhist statues over 3 meters is styled the wearing Bogak (treasure cap)
Fifth, the head shape in the Buddhist styles are octangular Bogak and Bogwan(it's similar to Bogak), another shape is mostly a hempen hood in this area.
Sixth, there are six Buddhist statues which have the unknown things like the Yakban in this area.
As I considered like the above, the Korean Buddhists in this area were built mainly in the former period in Korea Dynasty. And the mode of statues were influenced by the people who lived in this region of Korea dynasty, that is a special products and the political and economic situations.
