Yi Sam Hwan(李森煥) is Yi Byeong Hyu(李秉休)′s son who belongs to the Seongho school(星湖學派). He had learned from Seongho Yi Ik, so that succeeded the school in Chungcheong-do from his father and developed it. In 1786, after writing the Yanghakbyeon(洋學辨), he made people read it to denounce Catholicism. It was the motive of the writing to protect the collaps of Confucianism and to save pupils, his family and the school from the persecution of government by keeping off entering the Catholic.
Through the Yanghakbyeon, Yi Sam Hwan criticized that Catholicism was the absurd heresy which had added the chinese words to Buddhist tenet. Besides, he denied the existence of Jesus, the theory of ‘Heaven and Hell’ and even God the father. In his cognition of the western knowledge, showing the monistic view of world of mundane and rational confucianists, he had thought Catholicism as the ethical standard of Confucianism.
There are two meanings in writing of the Yanghakbyeon. The one is to separate from the Seongho school that might be related to Catholicism, the other is to lead the Seongho school in Chungcheong-do region to exclusionism. In 19th century, the Seongho school in both Chungcheong-do and Gyeongsang-do region stuck to anti -foreign thoroughly, maintaining close relations with each other. Actually, in this background, the Cheonhakmundap (天學問答) written by An Jeong Bok in 1785 and the Yanghakbyeon in 1786 played an important role.
In brief, it is the fact that the Yanghakbyeon by Yi Sam Hwan not only played a big role in defending the Seongho school in Chungcheong-do district from the persecution of government, but took Yi Byeong Hyu′s school with open-minded inclination to anti-foreign regettably.
