Lee, Sam-hwan(李森煥) was only educated from Seongho(星湖), Lee, Ik(李瀷) at Cheomseong-ri(瞻星里) Ansan(安山) for 30 years until he moved to Deoksan(德山) Choongcheong-do(忠淸道) province. What he knows about Seongho’s life is much more than anybody due to this background. After Seongho’s death, he became Seongho’s great disciple that Inherited Seongho’s studies and practiced Seongho’s words and good deeds. He even trained his disciples through the methods of Seongho’s teaching.
After Seongho’s death in 1763, Deoksan where Lee, Byeong-hyu(李秉休) lived in became the home of Seongho school In fact. But after Lee, Byeong~hyu’s death in 1776, the situation has been significantly changed as departure of key members of Lee, Byeong-hyu’s disciple.
After the 1780s, when Seongho school indulged in difficult situation because of their division, Lee, Sam-hwan led Seongho school in Deoksan district. Jeong, Yak-yong(丁若鏞) also recognized him as the de facto leader. In 1895, the academic discussion at Seo-am(西巖講學) under Lee, Sam-hwan’s subjectivity also was made in such background.
The relation between Lee, Byeong-hyu and Lee, Sam-hwan was father and son, but academic and ideological nature of them were significantly different. Further, Lee, Byeong-hyu did not interest in Lee, Sam-hwan’s scholarship. On acts of Lee, Sam-hwan’s life, we can find the fact that he followed Seongho’s daily life as a model, and strived to follow his studies and thoughts.
On the one hand, Lee, Byeong~hyu did not seem to be deeply interested in cultivating disciple of Deoksan district-born. In the days that led Seongho school with Yoon, Dong~gyu(尹東奎) and An, Jeong-bok(安鼎福) in 1960~1970’s, He was revered from the youth of Seongho school because of the open nature of the study. Furthermore, Even though he planned to train a successor to lead Seongho school in future, he did not seem to neglect training the disciple in the area. Eventually, Kweon, cheol-shin(權哲身) and his colleagues who followed Lee Byeong~hyu became his successors, but they could not keep maintaining the name bcause of the Catholic persecution by the government. On the other hand, Lee, Sam-hwan spearheaded rejecting catholicism, practicing as a model by Seongho’s Lesson, words and actions, and devoted himself to recover Seongho school with his disciple. He also prosecuted Seongho’s portrait with the Confucian in the region. His friends and disciples spoke openly the fact that Lee Sam-hwan was a legitimacy of Seongho instead of Lee Byeong-hyu.
In short, As of this writing, I think that Seongho scholatic mantle handed down in Hoseo district until the end of the 19th century was opened from Lee, Sam-hwan.
