Although the awareness of domestic violence has been increasing over the past thirty years, the mainstream of domestic violence theory still focuses on the centrality of gender in heterosexual relationships. If the main assumption in domestic violence is based on power, domestic violence is limited to a gender-based phenomenon? Nevertheless it has been speculated that the mainstream domestic violence theory, with its doctrine of male victimizers and female victims, has contributed to the invisibility of lesbian domestic violence as it precludes the possibility of such violence occurring, as such very little is known regarding domestic violence in lesbian relationship. Do women really batter women? In fact, domestic violence in lesbian couples occurs at approximately the same rate as in heterosexual relationships. In an attempt to better understand lesbian battery in our society, the objectives of the present study are two folds. First, to define and examine violence in intimate lesbian relationships. Second, to acknowledge that a feminist analysis of gender socialization and its role in domestic violence is inadequate to explain same sex intimate violence, specifically lesbian battery. The scope of this paper includes a description of mainstream domestic violence theory and the nature of lesbian battery, including issues as prevalence and help seeking behavior. Furthermore, the implications for future research and policy making are discussed. Finally, an analysis of how lesbian abuse in intimate relations challenges mainstream domestic violence theory is presented.
