In 1995, the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women was held in Beijing. This was in some ways a turning point for women’s movements internationally. Unprecedented international governmental commitments were made to gender equality with the Beijing Platform for Action. An unprecedented number of activists and advocates came together to discuss, debate and mobilize around gender issues. Chinese governmental and non-governmental participants played a central role in this forum. The Beijing women’s conference had a lasting impact in China. For this conference, LGBT (especially lesbian) people from different places in the world came to China. It had a remarkable and meaningful influence on China as it was the first time Chinese lesbian groups connected with the global gender and lesbian movement. There was a Lesbian Tent at the conference, and lesbian and gay activists who couldn’t participate in the conference organized a party inviting global lesbian activists. It was the first time for Chinese official and nongovernmental participants to get to know and understand lesbian issues. I combine interviews with conference participants (including participants from women’s organizations) with a documentary to review and narrate the 1995 stories. I show the connections between the Beijing Conference and the development of Chinese lesbian groups; I explore the spread and impact of gender awareness in Chinese lesbian communities who started to advocate for “lesbian rights as human rights”; I discuss how lesbian communities and women’s NGOs came to see, know, work with each other in the last 20 years; and the achievements made through subsequent processes.
