Women and children are the sufferers of violence at home in our so called safest haven where the worst doing are to be kept a hush-hush private family matter and it is considered to be tolerable and acceptable especially on part of the victim because it has been going on like this since ages and also misunderstood as a part of the culture. But fortunately with recent development and progress in the law being made comprehensive and with its enhanced legal intervention the offence of domestic violence can be discouraged, prevented and curbed bringing a hope of light for women for better life. Although women in Bhutan have always had equal social status as the men and also because of the liberal society of Bhutanese people, there is prevalence of subtle stigma in the society after divorce unlike other countries in the South East Asia region. Still the number of cases of domestic violence being reported has increased drastically in just a decade after our organization called Respect, Educate, Nurture, and Empower Women (RENEW) was established. Tackling domestic violence has always been a challenge, in the past because of the cultural reasons and also subtle gender stereotypes. Still now women lack behind in many areas especially financial dependency which is the root cause of the victims been unable to get out of the domestic violence situation. So I will be presenting a paper on not just prevalence of domestic violence but also the challenges that this kind of aggression implies and how the administration of local justice system and our institution RENEW has responded in incidents involving violence against women.
