Namgang Yi Seunghun(南岡 李昇薰) was a famous Christian nationalist in early modern Korea. There are two or three biographies and many articles on him. However, there are still some confusions about his life and activities. This paper re-examines his life as a Christian activist. It reaches the following conclusions:
First, it was in 1908, not in September 1910 as previously thought, that Yi Seunghun became a Christian.
Second, it was in March 1917, not in March 1915 as previously known, that Yi Seunghun entered the Pyeong-yang Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He was baptized in 1915 by Pastor Chung, and was ordained as an elder at Osan Church in 1916.
Third, the reason why he dropped out of the Pyeong-yang Presbyterian Theological Seminary was not due to the advice of Stacy L. Roberts, an American Presbyterian Missionary, in 1917, but rather because of his own decision made in prison between 1919 and 1922.
Fourth, he made acquaintance with the members of the Bible and Chosen(聖書朝鮮), the so-called “No-Church” group, since the fall of 1929 and stopped attending Sunday worship services afterwards.
Finally, the reason why he was dismissed from the elder position of Osan Church by the Pyeongbuk Presbytery on Feb. 4, 1930, was not because of his smoking and drinking, but because of his not attending Sunday worship services and not serving as an elder, However, he remained to be a faithful and active Christian until he died in 1930.
