The issue of polygamy and church membership was one of the major points of conflict between Christianity and Korean religions and customs at the turn of the twentieth century. What was controversial was not the toleration of an existing church member becoming a polygamist, but the admission of a polygamist or a concubine applicant into the church by baptism. If a man had been a polygamist before hearing the Gospel, should he abandon the extra wives in order to be baptized? If polygamy was forbidden, what would become of the discarded wives and children? Which wife should be chosen, the one best loved, or just the first, or the mother of the children? Was it merciful for the church to tolerate the centuries-old custom, forgive the applicants past sin, baptize him, and wait for him to decide what to do regarding his wives? Was not there a middle position between the extremes?
This paper examines the polygamy question in the early Korean Protestant Churches. It focuses on the difference between the Methodists and Presbyterians in dealing with the issue, diverse views among the Presbyterian missionaries, the response of Korean Christians, and the case of So Sang-yun(徐相崙).
The Methodist missions adopted the policy of total exclusion of polygamists in 1895 and the Korean Methodists accepted it fully by 1902, when some believers confessed their hidden sin of polygamy before the church and sent away concubines. The Presbyterian missions reached a decision in 1897. As the question of Mr. So Sang-yun showed, however, it was not fully solved until 1907. Most Presbyterian missionaries in Seoul-Gale, Vinton, Moore, Aviscn, Clark and others-advocated the admission of polygamists to the church and of Mr. So to the church office, yet the majority of the Presbyterian missionaries in other stations, including Pyongyang Station, defended total exclusion and opposed So’s eldership. The decision of the Council in 1907 was the final blow for the tolerators. On the other hand, as the Methodists and Presbyterians were discussing the formation of one independent Korean Church from 1904, it was difficult for the Presbyterian Council to allow So’s ordination, for it was not harmonious with the Methodist policy.
