Lee Kyungsun, who was a clergyman of the Methodist Church, played an active role in Donguhoe, an internal branch of the Hungsadan (Young Korean Academy). Especially, he took charge of Donguhoe’s evangelization of rural areas, through which he started to get interested in Christian Socialism. He visited America with a purpose of observation in 1937. During this time, he thought over the direction of Korean independence movement. He thought it necessary to unify organizations and enhance military movement, and as working for these he got interested in Socialism. He took charge of several organizations such as the China Aid Society, Korean Volunteers Corps Aid Society in China and American Branch of the Korean National Revolutionary Party. In comparison with the Kukminhoe(Korean National Association) and Dongjihoe which were concerned about diplomatic independence movement, these organizations emphasized armed action.
Lee Kyungsun was fascinated at Socialism after the outbreak of the Pacific War in December, 1941. He thought that Korea should be founded anew after independence. Shortly before independence, he joined the U.S. Army and visited China as a staff of the ass's Eagle Project. It seems that he witnessed evil practices of Capitalism and was inclined to Communism, He changed his name, gave up his clergyman position and even forsook his faith. Instead, he joined the American Communist Party and devoted himself to pro-North Korean political campaigns. However, he became a victim of power struggle in the Communist Party-he was accused as an American spy when he returned to North Korea from America via Europe in late 1949.
Lee’s transformation from a nationalistic Christian clergyman to a socialist, and finally to a communist could be understood as an attempt to accomplish heavenly paradise on earth. However, his attempt was ruined by the power struggle over divided Korea, regardless of his will. Now his name is vanished from histories of South and North Koreaa few marks are found in Korean-American history.
