"Treacherous Translation," treats the controversial staging of a Japaneselanguage version of the popular Korean romance, Ch'unhyangj?n (The Tale of Spring Fragrance) by the Japanese theatrical company Shinky?in 1938.
Whereas garnering favorable reviews from Japanese critics, the Japanese-language play Chunhyangj?n received uniformly unfavorable, skeptical, and even hostile responses from Korean critics. The Korean critics looked down on the play as a poor translation which did not measure up to the original story. By analyzing the arguments of Japanese and Korean intellectuals about the play, I demonstrate that the idea of translation as equal exchange - the focus of much present-day theoretical debate on ethics and translation - was embedded both in the colonizers' affirmation of the play as an exemplary step toward cultural assimilation and in the colonized's protest against it as an "inaccurate" or "unfaithful" translation. I also examine how the limitations of colonized intellectuals' cultural nationalism led them to retreat from political resistance to a more conciliatory insistence on cultural autonomy.
Finally, based on the work of such thinkers as Karl Marx and Emmanuel Levinas, I propose an alternative concept of translation as an ethical and political practice, which objects to the logic of equal exchange embedded in both cultural nationalism and colonialism. Translation theorized as an ethical and political practice highlights the ethical aspect of language as a venue where the self and the other engage in dialogue without silencing unbridgeable differences. It also emphasizes the possibility of anti-colonial politics in acts of translation which expose heterogeneity within the colonizer's as well as the colonized's languages and cultures, and therefore disrupt the colonial hierarchy based on the idea of a homogeneous community of language and culture.
