This article is planned to expand a research method of the history of the 20th century peoples’ everyday lives. That is to say, I would like to investigating the way that a lifetime photographs is applied to study of the history of the 20th century peoples(Minjung)’ everyday lives.
For this, I focused on the case of 『Yesterday and Today: A Photo Album of Eighty Korean Peoples』, published in ‘Group for research of 20th century peoples’ everyday lives. I was engaged in all practical affairs as one of the research team and participated and observed with all research process.
Similar to oral materials and private documents, everyday life things, a lifetime photographs are worth while to historical materials for recording and interpreting of the history of the 20th century peoples’ everyday lives. A lifetime photographs include ‘the old’ owned by informants as well as ‘the present’ being produced by researchers. Old photographs as everyday life things enable us to interpret the history of the 20th century peoples’ everyday lives through deep understanding about individual life history. Present photographs help to recording of the history of the 20th century peoples’ everyday lives also.
Researchers must understand multiple times(growth timeㆍrelation timeㆍ structural timeㆍhistorical time) inhered in a lifetime photographs to read history of 20th peoples’ everyday lives. The research of ‘The Album of the Eighty Korean Peoples’, a trial work about a lifetime photographs, gives us a few perceptions of selection of informants and photographs, interpretation and making text of photographs etcs. A publishing of ‘A Photo Album of Oral Life History’, based on ‘oral method’ about a lifetime photographs and individual life history, is another way for expanding research method of the history of the 20th century peoples’ everyday lives.
