A concept called 'modernity' is a western-centric dominant concept, in which a wealthy country and a powerful army equal directly progress and advance, by colonizing other regions with a theory of science and capital. This is based on dichotomy such as tradition and modem times, rationality and a desire, Western Europe and non-Western Europe, mind and body, and others.
However, in countries like Korea who are non-Western Europe and did experience a colony, this macroscopic ideology can't be a standard to judge everything. What being called tradition, modernity, and post-modernity is also changing according to circumstances and events, and has a cross-sectional nature, which can't be arranged timely and sequentially.
In this sense, a film 〈Chunhyangjeon〉 is a text suitable for a subjective study. Studies on a film 〈Chunhyangjeon〉 until now have emphasized only Chunhyang's traditional female figure and image under the recognition that it is a period melodrama, thus it was regarded as a symbol of Korean traditional culture.
However, besides this traditional nature, a film〈Chunhyangjeon〉 is a work, in which the nature of modernity as to the consciousness of the recent times was expressed further strongly, with a desire for human freedom and resistibility against a feudal order and abolition of class distinction and the like. Rather than a genre of a so-called melodrama, which is being used in Western Europe, it is showing a native melodramatic mode, through securing audience nature beyond a time, with a concept called public nature and dynamics. These progressive opportunities are generating the moderner' s desire and code, and making an imagination stimulated as a social fantasy. In that respect, a film 〈Chunhyangjeon〉 is the classics alive and a text opened, which enables a past and a future to be touched with each other.
