In this thesis I consider the development of the liberal education related on thinking and expression that have been introduced and tried out since the reorganization of University system into the Faculties. I discuss the problems that have arisen and ways to make improvements.
After Liberation in 1945, the Korean liberal education system started from the basic Korean language education format, and mainly involved teacher oriented instruction centering on "Korean language-National literature". In 1995, the new education system was announced, and using new approaches to writing, speech and discussion. This trend of change was aimed at student-centred exercises.
The content and structure of textbooks as well as the general lecturing support from the faculty level began to be considered in various ways. The new textbooks published so far have gone through a lengthy procedure, from planning, editing and publishing, and to suit the fast-changing interests of the students there have been frequent revisions. To solve this problem systematically, my thesis takes the current textbook as the main example, and the exercise workbook as the subsidiary one, to prove that a dual-level system can be more efficient. In addition, and more fundamentally, contemporary examples and exercises have to be updated continuously, and in order to achieve this more efficiently, I refer to the need for a database of relevant references. For this to happen, the formal style of lectures at Korean universities must be replaced with a more open approach.
