This study investigated the popularity in the novels such as "Jeokdo(적도)" and "Muyongtap(무영탑)" written by "Hyun Jin Gun" in 1930's. The peculiarity can be summarized as melodramatic principle. It comes out in the narrative structure like followings.
First, a three-cornered relation appeared in the two novels in common. That relation caused conflicts such as love affair or money or power. Their alternative choices represented the characters' values and writer's ideology.
Second, antagonistic dichotomy such as good and evil was clearly represented in each story. The dichotomy of good and evil is a easy mechanism which leads readers' sympathy.
Third, the process which formed moral occult, which is a melodramatic principle, was studied based on the characters in the stories. Moral occult was accomplished through the heroic behavior of heros and through the self-sacrificed and obedient image of heroines respectively.
Consequently, the writer (Hyun Jin Gun)'s response to the modern society in the colonial period were ascertained in his novels in 1930's; that is the narrative structure of popular novel. Therefore, popular novel should not be criticised for its lowbrow, but should be judged to be a product on which writer's consciousness reflected regarding to the society, history and reality in the colonial period.
