The purpose of this article is to explicate how Hyon Jin Gun imagined the national community in his novel, (Muyongtap(무영탑)). Hyon Jin Gun had known as a short story writer showed his change by publishing several ancient Korean historical novels during the peak of Japanese Fascism in 1930s. Before getting into the main discussion, this article examines the character of a pilgrim`s narrative based on (a pilgrimage of an ancient city, Kyongiu(고도순례 경주)) which was published serially by Hyon Jin Gon in Dong-A Ilbo. This narrative is a good material to confirm how the writer imagined the national community preparatorily and to understand the very core of his narrative in (Muyongtap). This article develops into three topics in the main discussion. In the first topic, the cultural tradition of Sinheung and Asadal as an national subject, the article studies the character of Sinheung as the driving force of creating our unique cultural tradition and the process of concluding Asadal to be an ethnic subject. In the second topic, the cultural tradition of Gooksundo and Kyungsin as an national subject, the article studies the meaning of resistance against foreign influence and the process of deciding a soldier like Kyungsin as an national subject. In the last topic, wide reproduction of cultural tradition and suffered women, the article studies the character of the surrounded subjects who cooperated and followed two national main subjects.
