“The Duel,” a much neglected story in Conrad’s corpus, deserves more attention than it has received so far from critics, for the relationship between the two main characters illustrates the mimetic nature of desire theorized by Rene Girard. This profound metaphysical desire rooted in mimesis, the key to the mystery of the quarrel, serves to explain the ferocity and relentlessness with which Feraud as the subject pursues his mediator, D’Hubert. Although D’Hubert achieves a partial insight into Feraud’s role as a rival who functions to intensify his own desire for life, he fails to effect a true conversion in which his relation to Feraud is transcended. Unique among Conrad’s works, the double relationship in the story is not weighted with the moral-ethical or political, for it is used by Conrad to explore an extreme yet symptomatic aspect of the human condition.
