So far, it has been discussed about western Imagenation focusing on the work in the 1980s for OISHINBO .
First, Kariya is criticizing Japanese people for having strong complex about the West. In terms of food culture, it is showing that Japanese culture is more excellent than Western culture, and that it is merely a doll of just following the way the West says if politicians or Japanese people fail to tell what they should due to Japan's being bent solely upon the visibly economic profit. Given just coming up with the Western way, Japanese culture will be failed to be possibly kept. That is the reason for requiring to maintain Japanese culture with courage and to oppose with prowess like Japanese ancestors who catch up with a whale. In others words, it can be said to be meant the necessity of escaping from the Western complex with boldness.
Second, aiming to get out of Western complex, it is said the necessity of not only courage, but also realization and awareness of how Japanese culture is excellent. In particular, it is representing that Japanese people are really familiar only to the worship phenomena for the West without perceiving their own ability while Westerners themselves are admiring and respecting like this for Japanese culture. It is said the necessity of understanding that products, which Japan is making now, also stem from such culture at which even the Westerner marvels, like soup or garden in Japan.
Third, it needs to be avoided that we are only aware of Japanese excellent culture. It insists on the necessity of endeavoring so that even the Westerns can see and understand.
As above, Kariya is expressing the social situation in which the Western jealousy and envy according to Japan's economic development in the 1980s was shown with 「 Japan-bashing」, through the cartoon titled 「OISHINBO」toward either the West or Japan's fellow countrymen. This can be said that 「OISHINBO」is not merely the cartoon, but is well reflecting the social condition at that time. Namely, it can be said to be those that represented Japanese culture to the Westerner, with own nationals' Western complex, superior ethnocentrism filled with nationalism, and cultural relativism. With respect to the deteriorated relationship between Japan and America, it is indicating that only in case of being able to insist on Japanese culture with courage, America's unilateral logic can be overcome.
