This study is conducted to examine the dissemination of a Japanese-style fashion magazine Mina in China under the theoretical framework of cultural hybridity. Japan has taken a leading position on popular culture in Asia and been exporting its cultural products for several decades. Japanese-style fashion magazines have become influential in China after the new millennium. The popularity of Japanese popular culture is due to its comparative earlier modernization in the region: Japan’s achievement alternative modernity endows its popular culture with two features facilitating the regional cultural flow: superiority and commonality. In the case of Mina, the superiority is demonstrated in the advancement of translating the western fashion while commonality is embodied in the ‘practicability’ adopted as cultural translation strategy. When exported to China, both the cultural product itself and the syntax are adopted and utilized by Chinese editors in the triangular cultural flow of “West-Japan-China”: Chinese version of Mina consists of translated original Japanese contents and its own translation of western fashion with the help of Japanese translation strategy. Therefore, Japanese-style fashion magazine, as a stabilized cultural hybrid of Japanese and western culture, is now re-hybridizing in the more complicated context of China. Due to the complexity and historical factor, whether a new hybrid can be achieved is still under question, which reveals a critical angle to review the culture flow and culture hybridity.
