Modern studies on Japanese political thought were carried out during the era of the "Taisho Democracy' which was greatly influenced from pluralist theory of state, Anarchism, and Marxism.
Overcoming of modernity after the war were one of the mein themes in Japan Academism. Before the war, Modernity was considered to have originated in West Imperialism. Just after the war, the Studies to criticise the semi-feudality of Japanese society increased under the influence of Japanese Kozaha(講座派) Marxism.
Maruyama Masao, who created the principle of the history of Japanese political thought, emphasized that it is a feature of modernity to distinguish between publicness and privateness, on the basis of the studying of Ogyuu Sorai(萩生?徠), a Confucian scholar in Tokugawa period. And He made a great contribution to the history of Japanese political thought in the analysis of the premodernity in Japanese society.
Critical studies on the universality in Western modernism were on the increase in 1960s through the study of Japanese popular thoughts. And In 1970's it was evident that models based on Western modernism were no more valid to explain the Japanese political thoughts. In result, several studies redefining the modernity in the Japanese political thoughts have been endeavored thereafter. One of the problems in the studies on political thought in Japan is that they hardly dealt in actual political subjects.
