There have been a great many studies of English textbooks in Korea, but virtually none of them have considered the authenticity of English used in the textbooks though the presence of some ungrammatical or odd English sentences in the textbooks has occasionally been noted. The present study, an effort to fill this gap, is a corpus-based analysis of Korean English textbooks and aims to demonstrate the authenticity of textbook English by examining the five most Widely used series of middle school English textbooks (7th-9th grades). In particular, the study considers a set of lexical and lexico-grammatical factors on the basis of several major English corpora and relevant corpus-based studies, and it analyzes the 15 middle English textbooks according to those factors as a means of evaluating the authenticity of English used in the selected textbooks and explains the implications emerging from such analysis.
