Techne and Episteme
Ancient greek thought there are two things which human being can do: one is techne, another is episteme. Techne means technology, technical activities which man does by hand and foot; in contrast to it, episteme is epistemological activities which man uses his head(brain).
Techne is the problem of method, know-how, episteme is the problem of knowledge, know-why. With good techne(technology) you may become a master(expert), with good episteme(knowledge) a doctor. In West as well as in east, people thought that episteme is superior to techne, more important than the latter.
Mythology and Science
If episteme is the problem of know-why, it means knowledge about arche and principles of all realities. According to ancient greek philosophers as Platon and Aristotle, the starting point of science is thaumazein. While mythology is a explanation of the origin of natural phenomena through imagination, science is a explanation of it by reasoning with experimental perception. Mythology is the infant stage of human spirit, while science is the adult stage of it. The transition from mythology to science is called , enlightenment'(Aufklarung). However, the human spirit is not really enlightened, until it find the ultimate truth from divine revelation in the Holy Scripture as well as in the christian scholarship and learning.
Basic Principles of Christian Scholarship and Learning
What are basic principles of the christian scholarship and learning according to the Scriptures.
Firstly, the fundamental principle of christian scholarship is 'Creation-Fall-Redemption'. It is also not only the principle of salvation and history, but also of the christian worldview.
The second principle of the christian scholarship is Holy Scripture as the sole source of ultimate truth.
The third principle of the christian scholarship is human being as imago Dei.
The fourth principle of the christian scholarship is the regenerated reason as subject of the christian learning.
The last, fifth principle is Soli Deo Gloria as purpose and goal of the christian scholarship.
