Tale has been continuously reinterpreted by the creators of the tale and its predecessors, gaining new meaning and significance. This is also true for tale on supernatural events. Through this generations of reinterpretations, tale on supernatural events has provided different explanations for similar and even identical events, depending on its region of discussion. Based on these trends in tale, this thesis will discuss the tale of Mountain Movement in the Incheon Region.
The tale of Mountain Movement develops around the main story line of “this mountain (or island) has established itself in its current position through the following reasons.” The tale of Mountain Movement in the Incheon Region does not simply focus on the reasons behind the movement, but adds significance and reasons for such movement and its placement. According to the organizational structure of the story, the former is refereed to as being “mono-structured” while the latter is viewed as “composite-structured.”
Mono-structured tale focuses on the formation of the mountains and its spiritual and supernatural implications. In other words, you see traces of creational elements. Composite-structured tale, according to the driving force behind the movement of mountains, can be further classified into (1)Frustration of City Construction Type, and (2)Failure of national invasion Type. Frustration of City Construction Type demonstrates that Incheon was historically considered and developed into a city in the past. Although this realization might have resulted in a failure, these type of stories will focus on the willingness in building a new city, rather that the frustrated outcomes. On the other hand, Failure of national invasion Type will try to solve external conflicts through internal problems, thus giving additional interest to readers.
Unlike other tale of different regions, the tale of Mountain Movement in the Incheon Region do not introduce females, considered as an obstacle in the movement of mountains in other regions, and neglects interesting aspects like tax issues and conflicts arising from the ownership of penetrating mountains.
