The place where the life of a human being is conducted is the earth-surface space. The ancients had discussed the earth-surface space in various ways through myths or folk tales. Particularly, in our oral transmission, the formation and the change of the earth-surface space was not terminated at the time of the creation but rather there was the notion in which it was continuously created and changed in reality. This notion that seems to be reasonable in the physiographical aspect is necessary to be reinterpreted in the human geographical aspect where the life of a human being is discussed.
Beginning with this consciousness of the problem, in this study, the following points were investigated by particularly focusing on island movement folk tales among folk tales that handle the changes of the earth surface space: first, the recognition about the geographic features of mountains, island, etc. that are described as the movement but actually the earth surface phenomenon was investigated in the view point of <formation and change, and compensation by supporting> based on our traditional human geographical approach. Second, the problem of <statement and existence, and woman> that has the main meaning in the motif of movement-disturbance-interpretation shown in these folk tales. Lastly, based on the contents investigated in advance, the postmodernism topics of <boundary and movement, and floating> were investigated.
The island movement folk tales contain the concept of the continuous creation and change of the space of the life of a human being. Particularly, the basis of our island movement folk tales clearly shows the fact in which human beings participate in those changes and creations. Although the point in which the speaker who stopped the change and creation by moving in the same view point was the woman has been negatively discussed, it can be understood in the positive aspect of the world order recovery through the language. Therefore, the ideology of nomad life focusing on the action of ‘movement’ can be regarded as the mythical interpretation that is male-centered. The reason why an island can be called an island is that it ‘stopped after floating.’
