It has been reported that Baekjoong festival, the Buddhist All Soul’s Day of the 15th of 7th Lunar Month, has its splendid origin specifically in Korean peninsular. The earlier studies also has been successful to grasp the history and the substance of the event. The comparative study which helps to guarantee it originality, however, has not been sufficiently conducted as well as the effort to explain the reason of its decline.
This study aims to fill in the blank mentioned above. Therefore, the festival was studied in comparison with the Japanese Obon festival as a primary comparative source and the Chinese Joongwon as secondary. The result of the research shows that the three events share its characteristics in common; Joryung, a pray for the dead ancestors; Suhwak, a pray for thank the harvest; and Uranbunjae, a Buddhist ceremony for soul. In consequence, Baekjoong is not an unique type of event but is a common custom in eastern Asia.
These days, Korea’s Baekjoong has been experienced radical changes; the shift of worship time is one of the most important change among them. Despite the 15th of 7th Lunar month, the day which both Japanese and Chinese still believe that their ancestors' soul come back to see the descendents, Chusok, the Korean Thanksgiving of the 15th of 8th Lunar month, is now considered as the ancestors' day in Korea. The Korean Thanksgiving originally was the day which posterity visit ancestry. After it had been designated as the national holiday, however, it became to embrace the ceremony for the returning ancestors at home instead of Baekjoong or Joonwon. The change thus has made the scale of Baekjung be reduced and nowadays, it becomes a small festival only for some Buddhists.
