This paper is a consideration of the process of the creation of the Hyonchunil Memorial Day. In modern times states have created memorial days, flags, national anthems, and national cemeteries as symbols of the state in order to construct a nation state. This has also been the case in South Korea. In South Korea, Hyonchunil was created as a national memorial day on June 6th to commemorate war dead from the Korean War. At the time when Hyonchunil was established in 1956, the reasons given for its establishment were to remind people of the Korean War, and to continue the lasting custom of having festivals, and June 6th was chosen because it is one of the 24 seasonal festivals. However, even after searching through the glossary of festivals (Seshiki), no record of conducting a festival for the dead on Hyonchunil can be found. This is thought to be because the state acted with a political intention to emphasis continuity with the past, and because it is a newly invented tradition.
This paper, based on interest in the above problem, after an analysis of the meaning of Hyonchunil, based on an examination of the memorial day for martyred ancestors conducted since liberation from the Japanese occupation, considers the comprehensive and essential meaning of Hyonchunil in the national context.
From 1965, Hyonchunil, which until then had been a day for commemorating only war dead from the Korean War, also began to be used to celebrate martyred ancestors from the anti-Japanese movement during the period of colonization. But since 1997, in the process of establishing the Memorial Day for Martyred Ancestors, which had been conducted since before the Korean War and which was instituted as a national memorial day, the meaning of Hyonchunil became clearer. Those who desired the establishment of the memorial day for martyred ancestors said that the day for commemorating them should be established because Hyonchunil was for the commemoration of the fallen soldiers who had taken part in the Korean War; the memorial day for martyred ancestors was for commemorating those who participated in the anti-Japanese independence movement. However, the government at first rejected the establishment of the day for commemorating martyred ancestors because they claimed it would overlap with Hyonchunil and cloud the meaning of that event. "@Nevertheless, in the end, in 1997, the day for commemorating martyred ancestors was established.
As stated above, Hyonchunil is used for commemorating fallen soldiers and martyred ancestors, but in reality the emphasis is placed on commemorating war dead from the Korean War. However, since Hyonchunil is a day for commemorating patriots who died for their country, it is not envisaged that the practice of celebrating fallen soldiers and martyred ancestors together will be abandoned.
