The Lord’s Day is so important in the life of the Christian church that testimonies to its celebration have survived in abundance. It has been the original feast day and the day it should be proposed to Christians and taught to them so that it may in fact become a day of joy and of freedom from work. The history of the Lord’s Day begins with the resurrection of Christ. Otherwise, it was the day on which God bestowed on them the promised gift of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the first day of the week was singled out by Christ himself and set apart as the day of the resurrection and the sending of the Spirit. On the day, the Christian community regularly gathered to break the bread. The first Christians took participation in the worship for granted. It expressed their membership in Christ’s body.
The Lord’s Day has the Jewish festival atmosphere and is a corporate observance, but it may be easiest to follow the theology along the lines of the names given to the day: the first day, the Lord’s day, the eighth day, and the day of light, resurrection, and worship. On Sunday, Christians deliberately laid their daily work aside, and spent most of the day in corporate worship. Therefore, the contemporary churches must consider the observance of the day and its liturgical meaning-rest, worshiping God, and refreshment. Corporate worship is also important-the reading and proclamation of God’s word, public prayer, and the celebration of the Lord’s Supper. So, the church should value the Lord’s Day (Sunday) as its great opportunity for worship, rest and works of mercy.
