This thesis is to make an analysis of the meaning of the ‘subjecthood’ appeared on the novels by Kim Seung-ok taking notice of the personality, subjecthood, and the self called ‘Self-world’ in connection with the spirit of the times in 1960s.
As『The Age in Prose』has the interrelationships with the reflective discourse of the modern planning in 1960s, we know that his five works are connected with the gist of a discourse properly. As it were, the characters in his novels face up to the two faces of the capital modernization in 1960s, but they are forced to the problems of choice caused by the opposition with ‘survival’ and ‘real life’ at that time. They fall into a dilemma in new lives in the new age. He struggled to free himself from surviving to adapt himself to the modernization, but in the long run, he could not adapt himself to new circumstances. And he assumed a critical attitude toward realistic negation and contradictory concept created by formulating estranged subjecthood.
However on this subjecthood showing adoptive reactions on the experience of modernization, the existing studies claim that they are egocentric and a thing in a personal limit. And ‘Self-world’ in his novels is very closed and isolated characteristic, so to speak, it is ‘logical limping’ and unsubstantial form (idealogical form). However the subjecthood in his novels is, as the selfreflective subjecthood, critical cognitive faculty on the modern experience, it has a deep meaning facing the real form of modern subjecthood caused social negation at that time.
This self-cognitive subjecthood can not design the world to its heart’s content, it is not also passive subjecthood like fish-shaped bread by the structures and systems. The figure in the self-reflective subjecthood embarrassing its humble civic feeling against the unfair actuality in his novels expect the practical subjecthood, and it has the present state, it is also our own looks bringing up the personal and social problems.
