The purpose of the study is to investigate the provision and uptake of negative feedback in second language communication dyads with a focus on recasts. Recent second language acquisition research found that recasts in communication interaction in a second language may contribute to second language development. Forty low intermediate Korean EFL learners participated in second language communication by performing the interaction tasks with the interlocutors, and all the communication dialogues were audio-recorded, transcribed, and statistically processed. The findings are as follows: Significant differences were found in the amount, nature, and uptake of recasts provided in the teacher-learner (NS-NNS) dyads and the learner-learner (NNS-NNS) dyads. Based on the findings of the study, it is concluded that the interlocutor type, whether NS or NNS, may affect the provision and uptake of this type of negative feedback, and it can be implied that second language teachers should consider interaction patterns in second language classrooms.
