Lu Gui-Meng 陸龜蒙 has generally been referred to as a hermit in the late Tang 唐 Period. In this paper, I examined several features of his manors's holding and management, and the connotative meaning of his manor in the Tang 唐 - Song 宋 Transition.
Lu Gui-Meng tried to enter into the government official, but ended up serving as a personal secretary for a governor of Hu-zhou 湖州 and Su-zhou 蘇州. While he worked as a secretary for a governor, he had properties including two farmlands, which are called Zhuang-Yuan 莊園, in different places of his service-area. Even though there must have been a lot of difficulties for him to hold Zhuang-Yuan, the agricultural development of the Tai-hu 太湖 area in the latter half of Tang Dynasty boosted up the possibility of his landholding. Of course, he had hardships in the development of his farmlands, especially in the bank revetments.
He moved to the suburbs of Su-zhou and rented a house in 871. Since then, he usually stayed there. He did not stay at any of his Zhuang-Yuan. Under this circumstance he manipulated his situation according to his necessity. He entrusted the management of his Zhuang-yuan in four sites to someone under contracts. Naturally, he had little relation with the communities in which his properties located. ln case of drought or harvest, he just visited his two farmlands. As a result, he did not know the custom of village. I think it was his absence in the village in which his Zhuang-Yuan was located that transformed the management style of his farmland.
Many government officials in prefecture and county regularly had to change their service-area in Tang dynasty. Some set up Zhuang-Yuan 莊園 in their service-area. ]f they left, how could they manage their Zhuang-Yuan? I have a strong conviction that the management of their Zhuang-Yuan 莊園 was similar to Lu Gui-Meng’s case. This suggests that the change of employment relationship in the Tang 唐 - Song 宋 Transition resulted from the necessity of a landlord.
