This paper reviews Brown and Levinson's (1987, henceforth B&L) politeness theory based on the corpus of Korean business correspondence. Two terms 'solidarity enforcement strategy' and 'conflict avoidance strategy' (instead of 'positive politeness strategy' and 'negative politeness strategy') are used in order to make the fundamental proposition of B&L's model (i.e. the approach-avoidance distinction) well balanced. This study also focuses on the overlap between positive and negative politeness. A new concept of 'ambivalent politeness' is proposed to explain the idea of making solidarity and avoiding conflict by using the same strategy (off-record).
