Bare plurals have been claimed to be ambiguous between existential and generic readings. The generic reading is divided into the characterising generic and the kind-referring generic. I argue that the BPs that have been analysed to mean the existential reading do not actually mean the existential reading. I put the so-called existential BPs and the characterising generic BPs under the heading the general reading: both of them refer to the individuals in a particular domain in general. I also give a pragmatic account of the explicatures and implicatures of BPs.
