This paper discusses "Refusal" expressions of Japanese university students and Korean university students.
The results of my Discourse Role tests show:
1. Korean university students use more Negative politeness for older brothers and sisters than Japanese university students. 2. Japanese university students use mutual face with "reason" and "apology" for close seniors. Japanese students use a conjunction "node" when they express "reason". But Japanese students use a conjunction "kara" when they express "reason" to older brothers and sisters. 3. Korean university students use selfish-face when they express "reason" and "avoidance" to close seniors. 4. Japanese students use mutual face for close seniors often. But Korean students always use selfish-face for brothers, sisters and close seniors. 5. Japanese students use "apology" more often in the second refusal than in the first, because they work on the positive face of their elder brothers and sisters. But Korean students use "reason" more often in the second refusal than in the first, because they want their elder brothers and sisters to understand their circumstances. 6. Japanese students use "question" in the second refusal, while Korean students do not use it often.
