The present paper reviews the life of Korean students studying in Japan during 19108, right before the March First Movement in Korea. The number of Korean students in Japan had been increasing since Daehan Empire and have reached the peak around the year 1908 and 1909. By that time, the number of students mounted to over eight hundreds but after 1910, the year when Korea was annexed to Japan" the number decreased to about five to six hundreds. In 1917, the number of Korean students increased again up to about seven hundreds and more. One of the reasons why the number of Korean students decreased during 19108 would be that the Japanese government legislated for the regulation of Korean students studying in Japan. Based on the law enacted in 1911(e.g., Rule for students abroad),
Government-General made a list of Korean students in Japan and kept their eyes on the students who were regarded as dangerous by them. During 191Os, it was not easy at all to go to Japan to study.
However, Korean students who were lucky enough to go to Japan organized
clubs for socialization and actively engaged in different kinds of activities.
They met regularly and published their own magazines to exchange their thoughts and information. Some of the clubs went beyond the socialization; some students attempted to study about Chosun some made a secret organization for the political purposes. Their experience of organizing various meetings and clubs in Japan became a great asset when they came back to Korea during 19208. They contributed for the nationalistic movement during 1920s and some of the students who returned to Korea in 1920 indeed made an organization named Social Revolution Party.
Whereas Korean students who studied in Japan during the Daehan Empire
period were in general under the delusion that they were special, Korean students during 19108 strove for the self-development. As a result of their great effort, there came Korean students woo finally got the diplomas at the end of 19108. During that period, the intellectuals in Japan exerted a great influence on Korean students through their discourses.
