This paper discusses??Refusal??expressions of Japanese university students and high school students.
The results of my Discourse Role Tests show:
1. Japanese university students use negative face of selfish-face with??alternative??for older brothers and sisters. But high school students use negative face of selfish-face with??insult??when they refuse.
2. University students and High school students use mutual face with??apology??for close seniors.
3. University students change selfish-face in the first refusal into mutal face in the second refusal for older brothers and sisters. But High school students do not change their strategies. They use selfish-face in the same way in the second refusal .
4. In the second refusal for close seniors, Japanese students use negative face of mutual face more often. But high school students use hearer's face more often.
