The trade of Tianjin before and after periods of the World War I had rapidly growing. As a result, Tianjin had become the first trading port in Huabei areas. Tianjin’s trade and economy at this periods had changed the composition of trade goods, comparing with that of the former periods. The economy and trade of Tianjin had changed in quality. Through the development of the modern industry, the export material had changed from the raw material to the industrial products. Huabei peasantry had been subordinated to the world economy through the export of new product, that is, cotton. Especially, Japan had monopolized a import of the cotton. Moreover, Japanese had the Huabei peasantry cultivate cotton in order to secure the supply of raw materials in their country. Japan had invaded Huabei in order to secure their raw materials. In this periods, the importing articles had mainly consisted of the consumer goods. The feature in that period was the increase of importing food. The import foods were largely consisted of rice and wheat flour. The importing demand of the food had increased because of the growth of Tianjin city. The import of cheap wheat flour had inflicted injury on the wheat's sales, which was an important source of income of Huabei peasantry. The import of Japan’s cotton was very important in the importing aspects. Before and after periods of the World War I, Japan had hold on the Tianjin cotton market, defeating UK. At the middle of 1920, the development of the China Cotton industry and the diffusion of new technology had threaten the market of Japan’s cotton. In 1930’s, the proportion of Japan’s cotton had decreased less than 10%.
Finally, the monopoly position of Japan had increased in both import and export. However, it is not true that Japan had constituted ‘Trade Sphere of Asia’, which Japan had dominated. The position of Japan had substituted for that of UK in a Tianjin market. Therefore, Japan had invaded Huabei areas including ManJu in order to reinforce the monopoly position. In addition. Japan had attempted to reorganize the structure of the East Asian trade, through the Sino-Japanese War.
