The aim of church architecture is to worship God who reveals himself in Jesus Christ. Church architecture, through its external shape, shows the essence and theology of Christianity and church community’s faith, and, through its internal shape shows, not only the religious meaning and symbol of worship but also its mission orientation. There is an intimate relationship between church architecture and worship. Church architecture reflects the form of Christian worship, either sometimes rightly or sometimes wrongly. Buildings play the role invisibly of forming the worship, as well as of providing the convenience of worship.
In the history of church architecture, Gothic form which is symbolized by steeple -top had been influenced by Scholasticism which has been completed by Thomas Aquinas. It assisted the unity of ‘faith’ and ‘reason’. The mainline of European church architecture throughout 12-15 centuries, Gothic form was the one centered on priest which limits congregational participation, and therefore it had been attacked by the Reformation. In the Protestant Liturgical science, Gothic form has many problems, but it is the reality of today’s Korean churches that numerous Gothic churches are on the streets.
We can find any united space-arrangement in every Protestant’s churches. Even in churches in the same denomination in Korea, there are so many different worship space. Inner space of church, especially worship space must be consisted in the basis of worship theology in their denomination, and the holy furnitures must be arranged by the same. Pastors who plan to build or remodel church should lead it with an theological affirmation in worship space.
James F. White asserts that the core of church architecture is the worship which church community serves to God. Therefore, the most important space in church architecture is the worship space. According to White, each church consists of 6 distinct spaces. They are gathering space, movement space, congregational space, choir space, altar-table space, and baptismal space. In addition, there are 3 essential liturgical centers or furnitures. They are pulpit, altar-table, and baptismal font. And also there are additional furnitures such as prayer table, priest’s seat, auxiliary stand.
