To speak about current practices related to worship and music in North American churches today is much like trying to describe all the patterns of shape and color possible in a rotating kaleidoscope.
Various preferences driven by ecclesiastical, ecclesiological, theological, evangelical, liturgical, cultural, musical, social, and ethnic or racial interests ? and these preferences in an array of combinations ? impact what happens when a congregation gathers for worship.
As I often tell my students, any worship practice you can imagine is likely being done in a congregation somewhere. However, it is possible to identify trends or categories among these shapes and colors.
For our purposes, I will focus on the state of affairs among Protestants and Roman Catholics in the United States. While worship among the Orthodox is not static (and in the United States there is a wide representation of Eastern Church traditions), they have largely been immune from the trends we will discuss here.
