We are now surrounded by the ‘Civilization of the Image’. But, despite the omnipresence of images and their immense influences, our understanding and diagnostic in this regard seem to be insufficient. This article attempts to examine the implications of the problematics of the image, the imagination, and the imaginary, based on the work of Gilbert Durand.
The works of Durand nicely show a kind of ‘subversion of perspective’ that situates imagination right in the centre of our cognitive and behavioral activities, instead of limiting it to the passive and secondary activity of the spirit.
He departed from the establishment of the “Anthropological Structures of the Imaginary” which clarifies the existence of the ‘minimal consensus’ in homo sapiens, in order to resist to the all kinds of reductionism. It shows very well the position of Durand that searches the ‘liaison’, the ‘tertium datur’ between the opposites, interpreting, at the same time, all the reductionism as a ‘lack of mediation’. First, Durand shows, by the concept of the ‘anthropological trajectory’, that, in order for a system of symbol to appear, there must collaborate all the constitutive strata of the subject ― from the biological to the cultural. Second, by his idea of the three ‘figurative structures’, i.e., ‘schizomorphic’, ‘mystique’, and ‘synthetic’, Durand wants to ‘synthesize’ the ‘logico ― formal procedure’ and the ‘sense’. From this, Durnad passes the ‘mythocriticism’ on an author and his texts, and makes the ‘mythanalysis’ on the dominant ‘myths’ of an epoch. The ‘mythanalysis’ is divided into two models, i.e., the ‘topique’ as a synchronic model, and the ‘semantic basin’ as a diachronic one. He thus opens the way to the ‘Sociology of the Profound’.
From an epistemological point of view, it will be shown in this article that the problematics of the image and the imagination demands us to shift our perspective from ‘logo-centrism’ to ‘imago-centrism’.

우리는 오늘날 ‘이미지의 문명’에 둘러싸여 있다. 그러나 이미지의 편재 현상과 그 막중한 영향력에도 불구하고, 이에 대한 우리의 인식과 진단은 미흡한 것 같다. 이 논문은 상상력 연구의 권위자인 질베르 뒤랑의 저작을 중심으로, 이미지와 상상력, 상상계의 문제의식이 지니는 함의를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다.
뒤랑의 작업은, 상상력이 정신의 수동적이고, 부차적인 활동이 아니라, 반대로 우리의 인식활동과 행동의 중심에 위치한다는, 일종의 ‘관점의 전복’을 잘 보여준다. 뒤랑의 출발점은 인간학에서의 여러 종류의 환원주의에 대항하기 위하여, 호모 사피엔스에서의 ‘최소한의 합의’의 존재를 밝혀줄 ‘상상계의 인류학적 구조’의 설립이었다. 이는 모든 류의 환원주의를 ‘중재의 결여’라고 바라보고, 대립되는 것들간의 ‘연결’을, ‘제 3의 여건’(tertium datur)을 찾아내고자 하는 뒤랑의 입장을 잘 보여준다. 첫째, 그는 ‘인류학적 도정’(trajet anthropologique)의 개념을 통하여, 하나의 상징체계가 출현하기 위해서는, 생물학적인 것으로부터 문화적인 것에 이르기까지, 주체를 구성하는 모든 층위들이 이에 참여해야 함을 보여준다. 둘째, 자신이 밝힌 상상계의 세가지 환원 불가능한 ‘형상적 구조’(structure figurative)― 분열형태적 구조, 신비적 구조, 종합적 구조 ― 의 아이디어를 통해 뒤랑은, ‘논리-형식적 절차’와 ‘의미’를, ‘불변성’과 ‘가변성’을, ‘공시태’와 ‘통시태’를, 그리고 ‘구조’와 ‘생성’을 ‘종합’하고자 한다. 이를 바탕으로 뒤랑은, 한 저자와 텍스트에 대한 ‘신화비평’과 한 시대의 지배적 ‘신화들’에 대한 ‘신화분석’을 행한다. 후자는 일종의 공시적 모델로서의 ‘지형학’(topique)과 통시적 모델로서의 ‘의미의 물줄기’(bassin se'mantique)로 구분되며 ‘심층 사회학’으로의 길을 열어 놓는다.
인식론적 관점에서 보았을 때, 이 논문은 결국, 상상력과 이미지에 대한 문제의식은 우리로 하여금 ‘로고스 중심주의’로부터 ‘이미지 중심주의’로 우리의 관점을 이동시킬 것을 요구한다는 점을 밝히고자 한다.
