Even in a time of the Imjin war, Hyangris in several districts performed general administration tasks as usual. They also handled the war-related tasks, though their countty or district did not belong to the areas which were directly attacked by the Japanese military. Their tasks included sending supplies to war area and exchanging information.
Hyangris living in the areas directly attacked by the Japanese military or near the areas were divided into two groups with respect to coping with the war. One group defended their districts or counties to death with soldiers or formed guerrillas known as uibyeong to fight against the Japanese forces. The other group fled their district and sought safety in other districts. The difference in their attitudes toward the war was attributed to their different socio-economic status in their districts or counties. Some Hyangris owned massive amount of lands and acted for local governors while they were away. On the other hand, other Hyangris had difficulty in carrying out miscellaneous duties assigned by the government. Some of them chose to fled their district to avoid the duties, which resulted in a fewer number of Hyangris. Some Hyangris even joined in the Japanese army. This is because they had lots of resentment towards the government like ordinary people became insurgents out of anger towards the government.
The Imjin war inflicted socio-economic damage on the entire society. The government or the ruling class-led post-war reconstruction was carried out in various areas. Especially Yangbans in the countty made lots of efforts to restore the ruling system they could lead. Upper-level Hyangris also devised several plans such as securing their right of personnel management and strengthening their own rules to maintain their power in local districts. After the Imjin war, Hyangris aggressively coped with the changes in social class composition. For example, they widely publicized their or their ancestors' outstanding performance in the war. They wanted the government and local districts to perceive that they were more loyal to the nation than those who newly entered the Hyangri class. In addition, the war became an opportunity for them to recognize the importance of exchanges and cooperation among Hyangris. Marriage was used as a means to build an important personnel netWOrk. That is, Hyangris aggressively utilized their war experience and their ancestors' achievements in order to se=e their social status.
