In a war, all kinds of evil behaviors are justified as the means of war and the healthy moral value judgements are mostly ignored. Ruskin once said in his article, "War," "War is the foundation of all of the great arts."
Traditionally, there have been three theological views on war. The first one is the view of the Quakers. They insist absolute peace and reject any kind of violence and war. The second one is the idea of 'holy war.' It usually appears in the Old Testament. Conservative Christians often call this 'the war of Jehova / Yaweh.' The third one is he view if 'just war.' St. Augustine and St. Thomas had this point of view. However, it does not mean that they accepted all kinds of wars md means used. They only recognized the wars and the use of forces which had just causes as the just and acceptable ones.
All of the three traditional theories have weaknesses. They conflict against each other at some points. People, according to their back-grounds, may prefer one but have difficulties to accept others. My position, however, is not on pointing out the weaknesses of the theories. Rather, by recognizing the unavoidable situations the theories had, I will focus more on the realistic understanding of war. I do this because Christian realism accepts the finitude of human individuals and groups, thus, instead of falling into idealism, it tries to solve the problems of human community by transforming and changing the institutional and social structures.
