The first generation poetesses who lived in 1920s as intelligentsia in the era of enlightenment showed a variety of poetic modalities that gearing into social/colonial/patriarchal logic. Their pioneer awakening, permeated in their literary works, was such a social reality that was very difficult to materialize. Therefore, a variety of identities revealed in their literary works can be classified into the pioneer spirit-internalized poetess’ looks, the recognition of awakening that obtained as a human being, the feminine consciousness acquired from social customs, and the maternal identity.
I. L. Kim shows a variety of poetic modalities that gear into her mental world. They are such expressions as developed and modified from a kind of realism in which her poetic sensibilities are closely connected into real life.
M. S. Kim shows a reality-denial world of consciousness by linking herself to others through the voice of criticizing patriarchy and oppressive reality. She indicates a bisectional oppressive contradiction of woman, criticizes and laments conventions, and recognizes patriarchy and dissolves it with writing.
H. S. Na attempts to educate and enlighten a lot of women through publishing honest and plain poems and opening her private life, but experiences frustration with identity confusion and social inhospitality. Although she discusses liberalistic thought by freeing herself from conventions and attempts self-examination through poetry, she can not help recognizing the social inhospitality toward her divorce.
However, the thought of the new woman had a great influence upon contemporary and future generations, prompted the awakening of contemporaries, and even made people experience the bulky personality of woman. The poetry and thought of the new woman in the 1920s has led feminine consciousness continuously since then, and seemingly become the foundation on which the population of poetess occupies more than half of the literary world in number from the 1980s on and a variety of literary voices are ranged over.
