The aim of this thesis is to exanime the reality-oriented characteristic in Kim So- Wol's early poems, and evaluate the consistent poetic cinsciousness in Kim So-Wol's whole poems, I will reexamine the romantic structure of Kim So-Wol's early poems. Especially I give attention to the development of the dream motive and time consciousness.
Most of Kim So-Wol's early poems are based upon the romantic opposing structure. By the way, Kim So-Wol's poetic consciousness is centralized on showing the negative pain in the opposing structure of the phenomenon and the essence, and reality and the ideal. This point is realted to the dream motive and the time consciousness intimately.
The dream image is one of important poetic motives in Kim So-Wol's poems. The dream image usually represents unconscious desire and romantic longing. 'Dream' is a defence mechanism against frustration and nihility and a escaping tactic from real life in the poems of 1920s korean romantic poets, But the dream images in Kim So-Wol's poems expose the negative aspect of the real life rather than the aesthetic fantasy as transcendence. They reveal the grief and the nihility after dreaming. This aspect tells us that the core of Kim So-Wol's poetic consciousness is toward the painful real world.
The reality-oriented characteristic of Kim So-Wol's poems is related to the present consciousness in time consciousness. Kim So-Wol's poems shows the use of various tenses-past, present, and future tenses. Especially the past tense is used as the romantic source to acquire the identity. But the all of tenses ard always converged to present meaning in the end In other words, past and future tenses are used in order to raise the present meaning.
Through the above examination, we can realize that the reality-oriented characteristic in Kim So-Wol's posthumous works is originated from his early poems. Therefore, the estabilshed opinions that Kim So-Wol's early poems are products of the past-oriented consciousness and the sentimentality as a escape from the reality shoud be revised.
