This work puts its object in observing how the reason and the passion conflict in loving poems of sister Juana Ines de la Cruz and how the poetess synthesizes two elements and she attracts them her own interior world.
Although Juana Ines manily divides the love in two parts; the one of the reason and the other of the feeling, she does not pay much attention to its division. And she raises the following proposition to us: what class of love is more substantial and the higher one. The love of Juana Ines, sprung from the rational base, meets limits of the rational love, and realize the incapability of escaping from the desire. In spite of this, the poetess believes firmly that the loving passion must form in the base of the reason, and puts the emphasis in the necessity to harmonize these two faculties. The passion the poetess wants to obtain for the perfect love is represented like the jealousy and the absence of the loved one. The cause by which the poetess's passion results in the incomplete thing not obtaining th conception of the love, perhaps, is related to her real life. In this point, in my opinion, they execute the complex results of the black circumstance of her birth hidden behind her brilliant life, the entrance to the life of high society and conflicts to pass the life in the court as nun. Nevertheless, Juana Ines does not fall in the abyss of the feeling, and, on the contrary, gets to create the motif of the authentic love by relating the suffering and agony of love to another faculty that she has; the reason.
The starting point of her love is platonic love in which the reason predominates. To here the poetess pours the arden baroque passion. But the love that the poetess wants to draw is not the ideal love the consists of the perfect union between the reason and the desire. Her love is the human in which the reason and the loving passion don't get to be united, fight one to another and undergo conflicts. Here the poetess does not fall in the sentimentality nor appears like the analytic intellectual. She admits it without any dissimulation. Within this process the reason and the passion repeat action and reaction mutually and, by the consequence, can be born the more human and vital love.
In conclusion, the love that Juana Ines looks for, as she confesses it in her text, the one that doesn't look for the correspondence, For that reason, as Octavia Paz indicates it, the love that the poetess wants to obtain in the one filled with the spiritual passion.
