Toegye (Lee Hwang; 1501-1570) is an Oriental philosopher(Sung Confucianist) who wrote a number of books and famous poet who composed 1,510 poems. A lot of studies have been conducted on the field of philosophy until now. Studies on poetry also have been variously conducted but they are not enough. Toegye's poems about the maehwa blossom are well known, and studies on them have been conducted. However, there are much more verses about "stream and pond" than "maehwa blossom," which has not been studied yet.
This dissertation was focused on the poetic figuration of "stream" and "pond." The poet's pen name is "Toegye," and a stream flowing around his native village is also "Toegye." Toegye is an important image in his poems.
His poetic figuration is composed of three parts.
First, it is the flowing stream. The poet examined himself watching the flowing stream around his native village. He decided to continue his study like the continuously flowing stream. In many cases he named his poem titles putting "gye(stream)" in front of words meaning his house, for example, "gyejang," :gyesang," "gyedang," and "gyejae."
Second, it is the silent pond. He recognized a square pond in front of his house as silent but "living water." He sang a poem about life by the fresh and living pond. He recognized a silent and wide river as a big pond and sang a poem about the principles of the sky and the land. He figured the principles of nature as poems by accepting an old song, “black kites fly in the sky, fishes swim in the pond."
Third, it is the sound of the stream. He was poetically inspired by just listening to the sound of a flowing stream without watching. He examined himself continuously listening to the sound of water.
Though he used "stream" and "pond" as a part of verses, he figured them as important meanings in the whole poem. These verses harmonize with other verses and support his internal intention.
