Structualism has been used in many areas such as Literature, Art, social and natural Science. Structualism in the criticism of Literature was developed by the linguistics by Saussure and Jakobson, anthropology by Levi-Strauss and psychology by Freud. So Structualism is the most fashionabe method in the study of Literature. The acceptance of Structualism in Korea made the ancient and modem Literature interprete variously. So we can say that the study by the struetualistic approach is important in the criticism of Fiction.
The concept of structure among the structualists have some common denominator. It is represented as abstraction, universality and model The linguistics by Saussure and Russian Formalist, the study on folk-tale by V.Propp are used by the similir concept of structure. The Structualists argue that the structure is the relation of the elements in the total context. The distinguishing feature in Literature is approached by the structualists. God/human being, life/death, paradigmatic/syntagmatic, male/female, active/passive, these distinguishing features are very useful in Criticism.
Russian Formalists have develoed the concept of motif as a thematic unit.
It is important factor in the study of plot. And it have various motifs such as bound motif and free motif, dynamic motif and static moti, introductive motif, recurrent motif and so on. V.Propp researched the structure of narrative such as folk-tale, myth and dective novel And he argued that the importance of plot is the role function of the character. Levi-Strauss invented the mytheme as the device in the Criticism of Oedipus Rex.
The character in folk-tale is represented 7 types in the study by Propp. It is classified by the role of the character. Greimas emphasised actant model in the study of character. It is focused synthesis of the syntagmatic and the paradigmatic. The type of character was developed by N.Frye is distinguished by the mythoi such as spring summer autumn and winter.
This thesis aims at the study on the structualism developed by the many critics. But the concept of Strutualism is very various and ambiguious. So this thesis remains only a phrase in the criticism of Fiction.
